He brings energy to every match while maintaining discipline and respect — a true martial artist’s mindset.

Will trains out of Allegheny Shotokan Karate in Pennsylvania, part of the Viola family’s multi-generational martial arts legacy. The Viola family karate legacy spans three generations and has played a significant role in shaping martial arts in Western Pennsylvania—and beyond.
The foundation was built by Bill Viola Sr., a true trailblazer in American combat sports. In the 1970s, long before the UFC existed, Viola Sr. organized the first regulated, mixed-style fighting league in history—often recognized as the blueprint for modern mixed martial arts. His work helped lay the groundwork for what would later become mainstream MMA, earning him recognition as one of the original architects of the sport and dubbed the “Godfather of MMA,” before the rise of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. At the same time, he remained deeply committed to traditional karate values—discipline, respect, and character development—establishing a legacy rooted in both innovation and tradition.
His son, Bill Viola Jr., expanded that vision as a Sensei, author, and promoter. Through the creation of the Kumite Classic, he built one of the largest and most respected martial arts expos in the United States, hosted annually in Pittsburgh. The event unites traditional karate, kickboxing, fitness, and community initiatives under one banner, continuing the Viola commitment to excellence, leadership, and opportunity. Viola Jr. also helped preserve martial arts history through his research and writing, documenting the early roots of MMA and his father’s pioneering contributions.
Today, the next generation proudly carries the torch. Gabby Viola and Will Viola represent the continuation of the family tradition, competing at national and international levels and representing Team USA on the world stage. From world championships in Europe to national podium finishes, they embody the same work ethic, discipline, and fighting spirit passed down through the generations.
From pioneering modern MMA before the UFC era, to building championship athletes and nationally recognized events, the Viola family legacy is one of innovation, resilience, and leadership. For over five decades, they have demonstrated that martial arts is more than competition—it is a lifelong path of excellence, service, and family tradition.
Growing up in a competitive martial arts household, he embodies the philosophy of hard work, humility, and continuous improvement.
September 23, 2019 was officially proclaimed “Sensei Viola Day” by Allegheny County in Pittsburgh to honor the 50th anniversary of the founding of Allegheny Shotokan Karate by Bill Viola Sr. — a pioneering martial artist and local icon
The chosen date for Sensei Viola Day was more than a milestone for the dojo — it also happened to be the birthday of Bill Viola Sr.’s grandson, William “Will” Viola IV.
That means the proclamation and recognition of the family’s legacy coincided with Will’s birthday, tying the honor of martial arts history together with a personal family celebration.

When he’s not traveling the world competing in karate and kickboxing, Will Viola is also a dedicated multi-sport athlete at home in Pennsylvania. A student-athlete at Norwin School District, Will plays football for the Norwin Knights, bringing the same discipline and intensity from the dojo to the football field.
Balancing academics, football, and international martial arts competition is no easy task, but Will thrives on the challenge. His training in karate—where he has represented Team USA and competed around the world in countries such as Portugal, Hungary, Ireland, Wales, France, England, and Canada—has helped shape his work ethic and athletic mindset. The speed, coordination, and explosive power he develops through martial arts translate naturally to football, where those same attributes make him a versatile and determined competitor.
Whether he’s stepping onto the tatami at a world championship or lining up under the Friday night lights for Norwin, Will carries the same philosophy instilled through the Viola family’s martial arts legacy: discipline, respect, and relentless effort.
For Will Viola, sports are more than competition—they’re a way of life.
Will lives with severe food allergies and Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), a chronic immune disorder that affects the esophagus and can make eating difficult or even dangerous. The condition can cause inflammation, pain, difficulty swallowing, and a constant risk of allergic reactions. He currently takes Dupixent (dupilumab), an injectable biologic used for his inflammation, flares of eczema / rashes and EoE.
Because of this, everyday things that most kids take for granted—like eating at restaurants, traveling, or attending events—require careful planning and awareness.
Rather than letting those challenges hold him back, Will embraced the identity of the “Allergy Avenger.”
