Tag Team

SPARRING

The Kumite "Tag Team" concept was invented by Sensei Bill Viola Jr. Since then it has been adopted by tournaments across the country.

The flow of this division is "speed"

Only two (2) judges
Both judges must agree/see the point

The "switch" or "tag" command from the center is "point-tag-go" (this is a switch)

If both judges call a clash (point each way) it is a double tag out/switch

If you are scored upon, you remain in the ring until you score a point (or are subject to 3-consecutive scoring techniques)

Create your own team, or partner up with a friend(s) from another school.

Minimum of 2 players to make a team, maximum of 3 players

2-minute matches/Total Points. Each time a player scores, the scoring player must tag in a new teammate

If a player is scored on 3 consecutive times, and automatic tag is made. The “switch” or tag only takes place on the call/break by the center judge

1-time out permitted per team. The team that calls timeout, may make a switch if they choose to.
tag team sparring

Tag Team Sparring is a high-energy, team-based martial arts format where two or three athletes form a team and alternate competing against another team.  Total points after 2-minute round.

Normal point fighting rules and safely apply.  This is a co-ed division / open rank division.

  • Only one athlete per team is active in the ring at a time.

  • Athletes “tag” their teammate when they score a point.  So the scoring athletes always comes out.

  • Coaches have 1 (ten second time out) and may switch any team member at that time.
