At the time, Shotokan karate was still emerging in the United States. Viola Sr. brought the discipline to Western Pennsylvania after training under early American karate pioneers such as Robert Trias and George Anderson.

The original dojo began in the East Allegheny area before expanding throughout the Pittsburgh suburbs. Today the school operates in North Huntingdon near Irwin and serves students from across the region.
